I installed Skype on Ubuntu 9.10 successfully last night.

I downloaded from:
http://www.skype.com/download/skype/linux/choose/

I clicked on:
Ubuntu 8.10+ 32-bit

And it installed fine. Just have a go at trying it again :)

Exactly the same as what I did on 9.10.
Now using Lucid and its still working. Its a -little- buggy with sending chat messages to people who -just- came online. But works fine with everything else.

Try installing the Skype .deb in the Terminal and see what you got. The command is

sudo dpkg -i skype_package.deb
