I got to say, I absolutely hate them especially ones that are all "freedom" and that rubbish, no one cares, there confusing and no one who doesn't already use Linux would even have any idea after watching these commercials what Linux is.

The concept of FOSS is certainly important but I have never seen it as the initial motivating factor in getting people to try Linux. At least not at first. Along similar lines, I saw a commercial making the point that Linux is good for the environment because it can breathe new life into an old machine. While that is also certainly true, I tend to believe that you can more leverage by appealing to one's self interest by making the point that one can save $$$ by putting off that next hardware upgrade. All that other stuff can come later.

I agree. The concept of FOSS is certainly important but I have never seen it as the initial motivating factor in getting people to try Linux. At least not at first. ...

For me this IS a reason at least not to use microsoft or apple stuff. Maybe from a 'missionary' perspective it shouldn't be the first thing to bring up, but then, what is? Nautilus and gedit on the compiz cube? Plasma widgets in kde? A tiling wm most people won't digg? A terminal with source code in vim? For me linux is about choice and freedom (too much choice, actually, I still find apps better suited for what I'm doing :P ). Anyway, thanks for the links. I like the "I'm a mac, I'm a pc" ones. Did you see the southpark parodies on that?

Perhaps stressing the free beer aspect at the expense of the attendant FOSS concepts misses the mark as well since people are conditioned to view anything free with a skeptical eye: 'how can it be any good if it's free?'

The series "Criminal Minds" on US television occasionally will slap you in the face with SPOKEN references to their LINUX BASED computer system(s) as well as showing the multi screened displays and just how fast it is!! (poetic license taken, of course!)

(and they really ARE running Linux!)

Movies always show computers making all sorts of odd noises. I think it fills the gap in the viewers' minds, to stop them from thinking.

Not a Linux commercial nor even an OS commercial but I do love doubleTwist's Big Brother commercial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdVzboF2E2Q). It's targeted at the iPhone of course, but it applies to the i-everything IMO.
