I recently received a laptop with Vista installed, and I proceeded to remove Vista and install Ubuntu 8.10. The first time I booted Ubuntu, I was prompted to install the restricted Broadcom STA driver. After doing so and restarting, the wireless networking worked perfectly.

An unrelated issue forced me to reinstall Ubuntu. When I did so, and reinstalled the Broadcom STA driver, it no longer worked --- no wireless networks were detected, even though I have a wireless router nearby. As far as I can tell, the two Ubuntu installations were identical, as both times I installed from exactly the same liveCD, and both times I had the previous contents of the hard drive completely overwritten.

Could it be that my wireless card has suddenly stopped working (it is not a brand-new laptop), or might there be something else going on here?

Try to delete the wireless network from Edit Connections and recreate it.
