I booted the dvd with the installation ISO on my computer and selected the Install option then got the ubuntu symbol rotating (loading, i guess?) But after that went away, it just showed the blinking underscore from the command prompt. I cannot enter anything on it and it seems like the dvd is still running. Is ubuntu still installing? What should I do?

But it has been like this for more than an hour...is that normal?

I had the same problem on 10.04 and that got me in. I can remember earlier versions where this happened.
That may not be the problem, but we can start there.

F6 just gives me these options:
acpi=off
noapic
nolapic
edd=on
nodmraid
Free sofware only
