is there any way to install ubuntu or kubuntu on an already existing partition? i have a hard drive that has already been partitioned and would like to install ubuntu or kubuntu on that partition. if its possible how can i go about doing this?

The regular desktop installation of Ubuntu will give you the option to resize existing partitions. However, back up your data, just to be sure.

You use the manual install procedure and you have to select which partitions to use for root (/), swap and optionally /home.

You need to know your partitions by number. I had two spare partitions for future use labeled beta and data and of course selected the wrong one so my labels were wrong (easy to correct).
