has anyone tried to put the "ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso" or others on a blank dvd (w/ or w/- some sort of converting) just so it boots faster into the live session. I mean i think the thing that limits the speed is cd-rom read speed, am i right?? so i thought maybe dvd-rom should be read faster.

CD read spead is generally much faster than DVD read speed (52x versus 16x).

If you want a faster Live CD, then put it on a USB flash drive. That's what I do and it's much faster than a CD (though still slower than a native installation).

Maybe I'm just completely silly right now, but I distinctly remember that a DVD contains far more data on a single spin, so that 16 spins per second on a DVD is actually a nearly as fast reading speed as 52 spins per second on a CD.

Am I mistaken?

In any case I don't see why it wouldn't work. Hell, I just used a live CD from a USB 1.0 flash drive.

It works, but it definitely burns slower. I suppose it would read slower too.
The real reason you'd want to do this is to put more than one live CD on a disc (like this. (http://multicd.tuxfamily.org/))

since when 10 years older technology is faster than something 10 years neweeeeeer??

CD 1x is equal to 150 KB -- 52 * 150KB = 7800 KB or 7.6 MB (Approx.)

DVD 1x is equal to 1.32 MB -- 16 * 1.32 MB = 21.1 MB

It's some times wise to do a bit of research before helping others

I think the speed ("52x" for CD, "16x" for DVD) is compared to the regular speed of the medium. And as a DVD generates much more data per second, you can't compare those speeds. You can calcutate that a 52x CD generates about the same amount of bits per seconds as a 16x DVD. So no speed difference nor improvement there.

So, indeed, create a live usb-stick. Additional advantage: you can create a persistent usb-stick. Hey, I'm typing this from a persistent USB-stick. :-)

EDIT: here's my calculation:

Okay, I stand corrected. I will attempt to research future subjects.

Thanks for the correction BTW. Don't hesitate to correct me in other areas as well.

Seeing that I don't have a DVD burner, I just burn the CD or put it on a Flash Drive.
