View Full Version : [ubuntu] Grub doesnīt recognize partitions

Good day

I am currently trying to dual boot my old laptop. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a rezised partition but the system wonīt boot.

When I try to boot the "grub-rescue> no such partiton" screen comes up an nothing happens. When I type ls to see which partitions grub sees it only shows hd(0) and hd(0,1). I canīt even boot into Windows.

Both Windows and when I boot up with the Ubuntu Live cd I can see the partitions but Grub doesnīt. I have often tried to reinstall Grub but with no luck.

The Partitions are as follows

Windows sda1
Ubuntu sda5
Swap sda6

If it is necessary I could boot up with the live cd and print out the actual data from fdisk

Any ideas ?

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and do the following:

1. Download the boot info script. There is a link in my signature.
2. Once downloaded move the boot info script to the desktop.
3. Open a terminal and run the command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh

This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

p.s. Here it says that there is Lilo installed in the MBR, that must be because I wanted to be able to use Windows and used some Lilo method to install a Windows bootloader. I can install grub once more if that helps :roll:

Boot the 9.10 Live CD and choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads open a terminal and run
sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
This will mount your Ubuntu / partition.

next in terminal run
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sdaThis will put GRUB on MBR. You should be good to go. Reboot without the Live CD and check both ubuntu & windows to see if they both boot. If windows is not in the GRUB menu at boot then boot into ubuntu and run in terminal
sudo update-grub

I followed the instructions but still no luck !

This comes up when I try to boot

grub-rescue> no such partition

hd(0) hd(0,1)One question. Is it normal that the ubuntu and swap partitions are under the extended sda2 partition ? Isn't that confusing grub ? Should I try to reinstall Ubuntu but manually manage the partitions and not let ubuntu decide where to put itself ?

I'm not entirely sure what's going on with your GRUB setup, but I can say with certainty that Linux's presence in logical partitions is not the problem. Linux is perfectly happy booting from a logical partition, and GRUB is perfectly capable of redirecting the boot process to a logical partition. I've got at least one system that's set up this way right now, and in the past I've had others. (I've switched most of my six computers to partly or completely use GPT rather than MBR partitions, or I'd have more set up to boot from logical partitions now.)

You mentioned old computer. Old grub would give an error 18 if the BIOS was beyond its limits. Is this perhaps your problem??

My laptop was made in 2004 and came with a 40gb harddrive, so I donīt suspect that that is a problem

If the drive was only 40GB the 137GB barrier would not have been a concern. You now have a 149GB (usable) drive.

I would think that the BIOS is the problem as it is from 2004 and the files read by GRUB are beyond the 137 GB limit addressable by BIOS. See here from your script output:

There are only a few solutions to this problem. One is create a separate /boot partition within the 137 GB limit or repartition your disk so Ubuntu's root (/) is entirely within the 137 GB limit.

The last option is the least attractive in my opinion and that is to check your manufacturer's site to see if there is a BIOS update that addresses the problem of the BIOS not being able to read past a certain point.

To be more certain why don't you run another boot info script and post the new results.

How can I create a separate boot partiton when Windows takes up most of the space ?

Gparted can only create a new partiton at the end of the first partiton, right ? Could I do that and then move the partition in front after wards ?

Iīll try to run another boot info script this evening and also check if there is a BIOS update

Gparted can do just about anything but often you do not want to totally move partitions around. You should be able to shrink window just a bit more (make sure you do leave 10-20% free space inside windows) and create a new small /boot partition within the 137GB limit.

I have seen recommendations from 100mb to half a GB for /boot. If smaller you may have to keep track of how many kernels you keep after updates. I have a old grub only partition that uses about 33mb.

It should be sufficient to shrink the windows partition just a little bit more and keep the boot partition after windows. The Windows partition is only 130,10 gb.

I may have been to quick and should have read more before I acted...

I made the 100mb partition after windows and ran these commands as I thought it should be done this way according to the grub2 wiki page. I also changed the boot flag to sda3 from sda1

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/boot

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3


Now no bootloader loads and the system asks for a system disk.

Can some one tell me how to make a seperate boot partition and installing grub or link another site that does as I haven't found a good one yet.

You do not install grub to the partition -PBR unless you want to chainboot from another grub in the MBR. Linux does not use the boot flag, lilo may, windows does. It is ok on the new partiion.

General instructions except since they are older they discuss old grub. You will have to install grub to the MBR the same way any install of new grub2, as you did but now all the files to boot will be in the /boot partition.

Basically you have to copy all the files from your existing /boot and reset fstab to look for /boot. And then reinstall grub2 using the new partition.

How do I reset my fstab to look in boot ? I can't figure out how to set up fstab. Here is fstab as of now

I never had a /boot entry.

I would copy my root entry and change UUID to new /boot UUID an change from / to /boot.

to see uuids
sudo blkid

Iīm back !

All this had become a little overwhelming so I gave it a rest for a while. Iīve started again with a clean install, but now I manually managed the partitions.

I had created a separate boot partition at the beginning of the disk and marked that as /boot in the installation (I know that that might not be enough).

The system still canīt boot into Ubuntu, but at least grub shows up with a decent menu and I can choose Windows. When I try to choose Ubuntu it says that it canīt find the specific drive (I think itīs the UUID tag that follows)

So what should I do now ? I have to change fstab and move some files to the boot partition ?
