I have installed karmic for a friend on her Fujitsu Siemmens v5535 laptop

Recently after starting the computer the track goes completely insane as if its continually auto scrolling up and down at a rapid rate.

I cannot stop this, even plugging it and external mouse does not stop this behaviour and its rendering the laptop unusable.

Can anyone help?

it probably doesn't like the driver. try doing a hardware/driver update. or just run the regular updates, that may help

I had been working fine, in karmic for the last 4 months.

Only recently it started playing up. There were no software changes on the computer (mainly as she doesn't know how). I installed Mint 8 (based on Karmic) last night and it did the same thing.

It works fine for a while, then the cursor freezes of can only be moved up or down, and the pad keeps scrolling quickly up and down.

Is there anything i can do?

There is no option the laptop to disable the pad (can this be done in Ubuntu instead?), other wise i would do that and use and external mouse.
