View Full Version : [gnome] Ubuntu 9.10 on Gateway: Desktop Window Too Large

April 11th, 2010, 04:27 AM
Boy, I'm dumb or my senility is kicking in big-time. I thought I posted this question yesterday, but can't find it when I search. Please bear with me on this.

I have a Gateway MX3228 Laptop. I am exploring using Ubuntu 9.10 on this machine. I have been using Ubuntu in various manifestations for a couple of years. My cat poured a glass of water on my regular machine, so it isn't working, and I'm trying to get this 'un going.

When I boot from the live CD, the desktop window extends beyond the screen on the left and on the bottom. I can't scroll down far enough to read my screens and often can't click on "submit" buttons and such. I have un-expanded the panel, so I can access it, but this isn't a complete enough solution.

Someone sent me an answer on this, but when I go to the link to this forum, I can't find it either. It was a request for more information.

Does anyone have enough loving kindness to help out an ignorant old man in a solution for this? I so much prefer Ubuntu. Maybe I should go with KDE instead of Gnome?

It sounds as if the screen resolution is set up wrong ....

your problem sounds similar or the same as this one as it uses the S3 chipset too

it gives a solution near the end .... its worth looking here first

hope that this helps
