What are the difference between the three:
blackbox,
fluxbox, and
openbox?

I currently use fluxbox, but I'm curious as to what the differences are.

See A Comparison of Four Window Managers (http://urukrama.wordpress.com/2008/04/26/a-comparison-of-four-window-managers/)

Blackbox is not included in that, as it is not longer developed, but that post does discuss Pekwm and Icewm. Keep in mind that the post is two years old, so some things might have changed, though in general most of it still applies. There are also a few errors in it, as mentioned in the comments (Fluxbox can apparently create new workspaces on the fly).

Fluxbox development seems to have stopped to (the last release was from 2008 ), while Openbox and Pekwm are still actively developed.

Thanks for sharing, I'll have to read that later. I'll probably be switching to another WM after Gnome 3.0 comes out.

Try them and find out.

Blackbox = old
Fluxbox is more or less like an updated version of blackbox.
Openbox comes with no panel, and uses xml based configurations, and is made to be stamdards complient. It's more minimal than either of them.

In my opinion purely: Openbox for Simplicity, Fluxbox for versatility, and iceWM for completeness.

I love Openbox. It's a lot easier to configure IMO, seeing as it's just changing an xml file. Even though it doesn't come with a panel, it can be used without one, or you can use something like Tint2.

It's light too. My 10.04 B1 desktop uses just 70Mb on boot with Openbox, Tint2 and Nitrogen.
