Welcome to the forums!
There is no reason to upgrade to 7.10, as 7.10 has also reached its end of life. I would highly recommend backing up your documents and doing a fresh install of 9.10 (the current release), 8.04 (the current Long Term Support), or 10.04 (the next LTS, which is in testing now for a final release later this month).

It may be easier to download a release that is still supported ie 8.04, 9.04, or 9.10.

I am not suggesting you upgrade to 9.10; I am suggesting you back up your documents and do a fresh install of 9.10.
You can download 9.10 here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
As a new Ubuntu user, you are not going to have a good experience if you start with 7.04. It is totally unsupported. That is like recommending a new Windows user start with Windows 98. :)

Oh okay. i have that download going. I've had 7.04 for a long time but never started messin around with it. I am downloading the 9.10 while using 7.04 so im guessing once the download is down there will be some problems getting it to work but i will worry about that later.
thanks for the help
