Hi all,

Will Canonical Always ship free CDs for each and every release, or will there ever be a cut-off point ?

I hope it always does, coz i cant dwonload iso's over a 33.6 kbps modem. :)

To be honest, I've no idea if they'll continue doing it forever - I guess we'll just have to wait and see. However, I think it really depends on how popular Ubuntu remains, and whether it increases in popularity - As obviously, the more they ship, the less it costs per CD ( for them ); therefore it's more worthwhile for them to ship more CDs than it is to only ship a few.

However, even if they do stop, you can still get the CDs elsewhere - For example from UseLinux (http://www.uselinux.co.uk/), Budget Linux CDs (http://www.budgetlinuxcds.com/), OS Disc (http://www.osdisc.com/) or Cheap ISO (http://cheapiso.com/).

Well, here in india, dollar to inr conversion is damn expensive - 50. so it will be expensive for a 16yr old like me to buy such cds :) anyway, what does canonical make outta sending cds ? nothing! and since there pockets are no infinitely deep (IMO) they cant continue forever unles theres some real large funding ?

No, I doubt that they will always ship free. The world isn't free, and soon as it starts affecting the company, they will stop the free cd thing and just make it download only, or you'd have to pay to ship the cds.

I agree with miho..

Lets hope mark has money atleast to support for a few years more, after which i suppose it will be so popular that people will donate ? ;) :D :)

I'm willing to pay for Ubuntu but I hope it doesn't come down to that!

I dont think the CD shipping for free will continue forever. They had a deadline for free shipping back in October IIRC. Then they extended the deadline. So, I believe they aren't really saying it themselves that they'll keep shipping free CDs, u can get them while they are there.

They will ship Hoary CDs. If you want them, place your order in March, and you should get Hoary CDs and not Warty ones.

We will definitely be shipping Hoary CDs for free, and I believe if you order now, you can specify whether you want Warty or Hoary CDs.

Talking about the CDs I ordered mine in December and still no sign of them.

Should I place another order?

Whereas the idea of free CDs (or anything else for that matter) is great, I think Ubuntu should and would evaluate how cost effective it is. If this is a considerable amount then they should instead invest it in the development of the product (which should always be free).

Most of the countries now have high-speed internet access and for those countries that do not, Ubuntu should only ship them the free CDs!!

There's a really interesting interview with Mark over at LUGRadio.

It's Season 2, Episode 7 and can be grabbed from http://www.lugradio.org/guide.php.

He's asked pretty much that question by the guys.

The free CD is certainly a great marketing idea, many people may be put off by downloading a whole operating system even with broadband because unfortunately usage limits seem to be catching on now. I reckon the amount of people who've given Ubuntu a go will justify them loosing that money on the shipping charges

I don't think its financially healthy for them to keep the shipping free, but what I'm thinking of, you can get
Ubuntu CD + Ubuntu T-shirt $15
Ubuntu CD + Ubuntu hat $10
Ubuntu CD + Ubuntu mug 5

Yeah, I would be willing to pay for it also. Ubuntu is one of the few operating systems that I would be willing to pay for.

Jad, I'm onboard with your idea where you pay for the cd's (if you don't want to download them) but get something else packaged too.

I would like to see a nice printed bi-annual magazine dedicated to Ubuntu that would ship with installation cd's & live cd's. The mag could contain interviews with Ubuntu & Linux developers, tutorials, app intro's, etc.

They have magazines for mac, windows, Red Hat...I don't see why not Ubuntu too.

I also would like to see more choice in the Linux magazines, specially in the UK. All I see at the moment is just PC magazines http://www.ubuntuforums.org/images/smilies/icon_mad.gif with an exception of couple of Linux one's

a) CD shipping and product development aren't mutually exclusive -- right now, we do both, and I don't see any reason not to.
b) As for the CDs that you haven't seen yet, they just may not have shipped. Drop mako@ubuntu.com an email and give him your details and he'll let you know what's going on.

This is from the Ubuntu site

"There are limited number of Ubuntu 4.10 "Warty Warthog" CDs available. We expect to run out of these CDs late February or early March. We will update this website as soon as we have run out.

All orders placed that we are unable to fulfill with Ubuntu 4.10 CDs will be filled with Ubuntu 5.04 "Hoary Hedgehog" CDs. We expect to begin shipping these in early to middle April. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to read the FAQ (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/faq/shipit/) and contact us."
