Just saw this show up in my Google Reader.

I doubt that us Americans will be so lucky, but surely there's more than one person from Europe who is dissatisfied with Sony's actions.

Let's make them pay (Literally) for cripling perfectly good hardware!

I bought a Preowned one specifically because I wanted to try Linux on it, so I'm pretty unhappy about this update.

I sent this email to the company I bought it for to see if there is anything they can do...

Dear sir/madam,

I recently bought a preowned PS3 from your Ilford store. The driving factor for choosing this version over one of the newer versions was the ability to install Linux, which I did as soon as I set it up.

I understand that EU Law (Directive 1999/44/EC) dictates that items sold must:

* comply with the description given by the seller and posses the same qualities and characteristics as other similar goods
* be fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase.

Unfortunately this update has removed the ability for me to run Linux and thus contravenes this 2nd point.

What can be done to resolve this issue and compensate the loss of functionality I have experienced?

Kind Regards,

Steev182

I bought it at a local retailer back in 2007, but I'm definitely giving this a try. I had to backup a ton of my data to prevent Sony from erasing it.

I wonder what the DOD's opinion is on the matter, to whom own more than 2200 PS3's (http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2009/11/sony-still-subsidizing-us-supercomputer-efforts.ars) that run Linux on them as part of a cluster.

Lol. The Department of Defense bought 2200 PS3's?!!

No wonder the Afghan president is threatening to join the Taliban.

I have a feeling they have no need to play Madden online or COD 4 MW2...

I doubt they connect them to the internet. Either that or have a proxy designed to filter the updates, or some agreement with Sony that they have custom firmware on them.

Probably not that concerned- they are doing pure cluster work, not dual duty as number crunchers/games consoles. I doubt that the update that stops linux from running on them will be anything more than a 'point to remember when considering the next purchase'.

More pissed off with be the folders, a lot of them did buy PC3s for dual duty, and they now have the choice of keep folding, or lose online gaming, or keep gaming, and lose the folding.

Sony still supplies Folding@home as a download...Its still on my PS3. So I still have online gaming, regular gaming and folding...

Folding isn't just "folding @ Home".

There is also Rosetta, as such another o/s is required to be installed.

It's not the first time sony makes a stupid decision. And it's really sad because beside those bad decisions, their products are awesome quality.

Just think about when they released the HDD for ps2. A few months later they released the ps2 slim, which didn't support the HDD, so games that were supposed to support the HDD decided to drop the HDD part.
