And why is it being included in Lucid 10.04?

To what I understand it is a Micro$oft .Net emulator of some kind. But are the Ubuntu developers using it as part of the backbone of the Ubuntu OS itself?

Just the thought of anything Windows on my Hard Drive ever again makes my skin crawl.

So what is Mono and its place in Ubuntu? And if it is a variation of C#. Why use it over C and C++? Which are much faster.
