I'm thinking about buying 4-5 laptops for our company and I'm not sure about what to buy.
I would like to be in the range of 400-700 €.

Any preferences in terms of manufacturer? Models?

Actually, I haven't seen as many Compaqs in the work place as Dells and IBMs

I'm not saying you're wrong. I'm just pointing out my observations.

Lenovo Thinkpads are the industry standard.

I have a T60 and for the last 3 years its been amazing. Actually the best laptop I have ever had in my short lifetime.

Toshiba use to be top selling model in the late 90's and early 2000. But I believe they still strong. But nowadays I seen a lot of Lenovo, Dell and Compaq. But also check out Toshiba, HP and Sony.

Get a Dell laptop with at least 3GB of ram.
