Can't change horizontal virtual desktops to 4 on compiz

I'm trying to get a cube working on compiz, but it won't let me select a size of "four" for horizontal virtual size. Every time I select 4 it reverts to 2. Curiously, I can get a shape with three or five horizontal sides, but not four. I've tried everything I can think of. I'm running compiz 0.8.4.

in one of your panels (if you have 2 showing) do you see the workspace switcher that shows your different workspaces? if not right click the panel(any panel) add workspace switcher. Then right click the workspace switcher, choose preferances and change it to 4 there. I had the same issue. Good luck.
