I'm thinking about trying trying gnome shell... but i definatly want gnome 2.xx still available and i DONT want to mess something up. would the instructions here: http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/opensource/?p=1405 work and could it mess stuff up?

Don't know.. but probably yes, always expect trouble.
If you don't want to mess stuff up, just leave it and wait for the next release with this Gnome Shell in it.
Or.. well, expect trouble.

If you do it you will enjoy it and some problems maybe. From my experience I think that you better un-install Compiz and do not touch appearances/visual effects. It cost me a reinstall of the machine. Some how it corrupted the the ethernet/internet and USB function.

If you do it, tell us how it was.
