I broke my penguin! http://www.linuxformat.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_sad.gif

Using a laptop as a testbed with windows already installed, I've successfully installed Ubuntu 9.10, converted it to Kubuntu and allowed it to upgrade itself during the last few months.

However, in the last three iterations of this process the end result has been broken windows managers - the imagery, the reproduction of text, has been, well wrong (see the image linked here http://www.worldmaker.org/articles/article_images/Kap-untu.jpg)

The kernels 2.6.31-18 up to 2.6.31-20 are broken in this fashion and unusable. The last version of the Kernel to work correctly was 2.6.28-17.

I'm only beginning to explore Linux, not use it seriously, I don't expect to be doing that for a year or two, but any suggestions as to what is wrong, how it might be fixed without a major repair/reinstallation of the system will help in my education.

As I said, ...17 is working, so I assume there is something wrong with the kernel or upgrade process, in the later upgrades that hasn't picked up the specific configuration of my laptop's graphics despite it working in earlier versions.

The laptop is a Fujitsu Siemen Amilo P... something with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 according to the spec. sheet.
