View Full Version : [ubuntu] Can't change Visual Effects, Compiz effects etc.?

Hi guys,

Sorry to make my first post a thread, but I've seen the excellent community here and how helpful you all are so I decided to ask.

I have an Nvidia 9600M GT GPU and used to enjoy excellent desktop effects like wobbly windows, desktop cube etc. But one day my X became corrupt forcing me to load up in safe mode and reinstall my drivers.

I eventually got Ubuntu to load up again, but ever since I'm not able to use any desktop effects like wobbly windows. When I choose "Extra" or "Normal" it searches for hardware drivers (and evidently finds them) but then tells me "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As well as that, when I choose desktop cube etc. in Compiz, it seems to enable, but none of the effects actually happen when I press the various hotkeys.

I have the most up-to-date Nvidia drivers and have tried switching back to old drivers, but no luck with either.

Thanks guys,
Aaron, Ireland.

Can anyone help?

Click the compiz-check link in my sig. Download and run it and post the output here.

Hi lidex. Thanks for the reply. The output is below:

(just to reiterate, everything *used* to work quite well)

Go to "Hardware Drivers" and disable all of them. Rename xorg.conf:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf xorg.conf.old
Reboot

Hmmm... the plot thickens...?

Not really... xorg.conf is deprecated now by default. If you don't have it, not necessarily a problem. But you may need one - we'll get to that.

What's the next step? Fire ahead with the reboot or re-enable the video drivers?

Reboot. Then go to hardware drivers and enable the one that's recommended. Then this in a terminal:

sudo nvidia-xconfig
Reboot again.

Right, that's all done. Still no luck enabling the visual effects :/

What driver version was installed?
Run compiz-check again to see if anything changed.
Post the contents of these files:

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Now you're just messing with me!

Let's see that Xorg.0.log again. Check in the "/usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules and modules folders for any broken symlinks.

Oh how I wish that were true...

Also, there isn't any extra-modules directory present. How do I check for broken symlinks? :)

Use nautilus to navigate and there should be an emblem, maybe a padlock, on the icon if it's broken. If in doubt, right-click and select properties.

In two of the folders in /usr/lib/xorg there is two "arrow" symbols on the files but that's about it. I'll post screenshots as soon as they're uploaded.

It also might be of interest that whenever I try and access System > Preferences > Touchpad, I get the following alert popup:

"GSynaptics couldn't initialize.
You have to set 'SHMConfig' 'true' in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics"

Right-click on that libglx.so and see what it points to.

Is that the info you're looking for? Apologies, as you've no doubt guessed I'm new to Linux - well, more of an on-and-off relationship that I'm only now consummating :D

OK. Try this terminal command:

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so

Time to remove all traces of nvidia drivers. Disable all in hardware drivers. Rename xorg.conf. Use synaptic to search nvidia and mark for complete removal all nvidia packages - except x11 - and apply. Go back to the xorg/modules directory and remove any nvidia libglx.so that remain. Reboot. Go to synaptic and mark for install nvidia 185, nvidia-settings, nvidia-common and all the nvidia modaliases packages. Reboot.

Only thing I can advise at this point is to do the process over again using a different driver. Check the driver documentation to see if it's compatible first. Google the error message for more info.

Try running:

sudo apt-get install compiz

I had the same problem and that fixed it for me.
