Hi Everybody,

Well I've been dogged for many months now with an external microphone that just won't work with Ubuntu.

I tried a Debian live CD this evening and my microphone worked! This is important to me, important enough that I'm switching to Lenny.

From the time I spent with the live CD I can see that it's really similar to Ubuntu so I don't think I'm going to struggle much.. but I'm wondering if anybody has any Debian specific advice....

Off the top of my head.. anybody know what the restricted codec package there is called? Will ubuntu-restricted-extras work? :lolflag:

Anyway, I'm still gonna hang out here from time to time. I just joined the Debian forums but it's strange and new and I'm not comfy there yet!

Switch to squeeze instead.

Bookmarked. Thanks.

Why squeeze?

It's going to be released later this year, it's pretty stable.

Also check out http://forums.debian.net as well as the "Ditched ubuntu for Debian" link in my sig.

Newer releases of applications and if you change all the "Squeeze" to "Testing" in your package sources you can have a rolling release. Check the link in my sig for a nice page about Debian. Also, here are some links including the Debian form of Medibuntu.

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=puredyne

Puredyne is an Ubuntu-based Linux distribution aimed at creative people. It provides a number of creative applications, alongside a solid set of graphic, audio and video tools in a fast, minimal package. It includes software for everything an artist might need - from sound art to innovative film-making. Puredyne is optimised for use in real-time audio and video processing and it distinguishes itself by offering a low latency kernel and high responsiveness needed by artists working in this field.

By the way, as of late, debian multimedia is giving borked hits:

W: Failed to fetch http://www.debian-multimedia.org/dists/testing/Release Unable to find expected entry contrib/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

changing to squeeze instead of testing doesn't work any better.

Lots to read now before I install.

Thanks folks that's exactly what I wanted to know.

More opinions of course welcome as I decide which Debian release to choose!

I use Sid. :lolflag:

Yes, I noticed that, perhaps someone could contact them. Though they might already know about it.
