View Full Version : [ubuntu] re-installation problem

After messing up grub due to a conflicting windows installation, I decided to re-install my filesystem partition (home is separate).

On booting from a 9.10 disc, I found that the hardrive I wanted to install to was now invisible to the installing program, however, it was visible to Gparted from the same live CD.

I found this was not the case using a 9.04 disc, so I reinstalled from that and now have a working system.

The trouble is, the hardisk is STILL invisible to the the 9.10 installer (but not to Gparted), so I am going to have future upgrade problems if I want to do a clean install.

How can I make 9.10+ Ubuntus see the hardisk?

Here's a simpler way of posing the question:

Why would the installer on a 9.10 live CD not see a hard disk, when Gparted of the same CD can see it?

And why is this not the case with 9.04?

Try to install from Alternate CD.

Try to install from Alternate CD.

Thanks for your response. I've downloaded and tried the alternate CD.

The alternate installer certainly sees the problem hardisk, but as it's quite different to the live one, I'm going to experiment on a different disk before I do anything on main disk. I usually just reinstall the filesystem and leave /home alone, and I don't want to wipe it by mistake.

Again, thanks!
