View Full Version : [ubuntu] Flaky CD Drive - how to bootstrap install from an external CD drive?

Hello,

I'm trying to install Karmic onto a laptop (Sony VGN A290) that has a flaky CD/DVD drive. The install won't complete without eventually getting an i/o error and aborting.

But the drive works ok enough to boot up the live CD, at least sometimes. So, can I boot up the live CD, and then put another copy of the installation CD into an external (USB) CD/DVD drive, and then run the actual install from there? Well, I'm pretty sure the answer is yes, but I'm not sure how to do it...

Note that my laptop won't boot from an external USB drive, unfortunately. So, I'm hoping I can use the internal drive to boot up a running system, and then kickstart the actual installation after mounting the external drive. Something like that...

Thanks for any help,

Mike
