If this is legit, it's good.

If you want quality printers with Linux support, get Brother. Ubuntu detects it with no problem as of Karmic, and Lucid. I have an HL-2140.

I'd rather not tape black electrical tape over the sensor on the laser cartridge so I get my money's worth.

No need to get overexcited. The 2009-2010 series seem fully supported. Please read more carefully. Older models such as my X5410 and 64bit are *not* yet supported. Fix your title.

you obviously don't know much about printer support in linux. sure, there are a bunch of brother printers that will work in linux, but for THE BEST PRINTER SUPPORT IN LINUX, USE HP. it's common knowledge that HP supports linux the best.

I have a Samsung printer that works excellent in Ubuntu.

Does these mean that printer support on Linux has 100% penetration? At least with mainstream printer makers.

As already said I have never found a HP printer that hasn't worked 100% out of the box under Ubuntu. I wouldn't use a Lexmark printer, even for a laugh.

Stay away from Lexmark unless they are true postscript... (Read phoronix forum)

HP printers usually work plug & print. In any case check http://www.openprinting.org/printers before purchasing any printer.

Lexmark sometimes provides a 32 bit proprietary driver.

My Officejet 6500 HP wireless printer is...

1. Plugin to wall
2. Type in wireless key (WPA/WEP)
3. Tell computer how to handle printer (HPLIP 3.8.x and above only.)
4. (If not on GNOME) hp-makeuri IP_ADDRESS and then replace current DEVICE_URI in printers.conf to the CUPS URI made by hp-makeuri

So not exactly just plugin print. Have to use ubuntu 9.10 and higher for it to be plug-n-print.

I myself interpreted it as ALL Lexmark printers are now supported in Linux. I have a touch of Aspergers about me. Then I thought about it for a bit and realised you probably just meant new printers. Either way it was open to misinterpretation.

Who'd want to use a Lexmark printer anyway?

i probably won't, as i am happy with HP's support. BUT, anything to help linux users have a better experience is better than no support.

The fact remains that "All Lexmark printers are not now supported" "All *new* Lexmark printers are" but all the models are not. As your title mistakenly states. I read fine, the problem here is with your ability to properly express yourself. Jump on that. ):P

You just didn't look in the right place. Try this link:
Linux Compatibility Page (http://support.lexmark.com/index?page=content&id=OS4&locale=EN&userlocale=EN_US)

Why are a bunch of you knocking the fact that they are finally adding support for linux?
I think it's a great step in the right direction myself, perhaps it will prompt other manufacturers to add support for linux.

True that right now they only have 32 bit drivers but they do have a workaround for 64bit and plan on have 64 bit drivers this year. I read the whole thing and found pages 4 and 5 to be most interesting.
Page 4 (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=lexmark_linux&num=4), Page 5 (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=lexmark_linux&num=5).

Sure I have a HP printer that works great and I've been a big promoter of HP products because they work with ubuntu and linux in general. But I for one am glad to hear of any manufacturer that adds support for linux.

Thank you Dell is more like it.
No, more like shame on you Dell.

EDIT: I mentioned NVIDIA dropping support with a link but it appears to just be for one driver. Here's the link anyway. It's really a misleading title it appears.

"If you want quality printers with Linux support, get Brother"

In my experience only some Brothers have Linux drivers - ditto for Canon.

Of course it will always be the new one you just bought that won't work...

I had Hardy heron and bought a HP and I had a lot of configuring to do but it worked fine. I now have linuxmint and I went to do the same thing but when I plugged it in to start the configuration, Mint recognized it immediately and I didnt have to do a thing.

Very nice :) Though I'll still stick with HP, I like their hardware support and they've supported Linux very well for years. But good to hear more companies starting to support Linux :)

Just tried installing the drivers on two different machines running 9.10 and both times it keeps telling me I'm entering the wrong admin password (which I'm quite certain I'm not ;)). Guess we're not there just yet...

I had the same problem. Run it in the terminal as root and it works. Type:

sudo sh

Now you're root. Now run the script from the terminal by typing:

sh [NAME OF DRIVER SCRIPT HERE]
