What are the pros and cons?
I think I want to move to Gtalk but everyone is on Msn.

I just use both with Pidgin. But I usually only give out my GTalk to others, and I just use MSN for some friends who don't have GTalk.

I wish more people used Gtalk...
Here in SA though, Mxit is a very popular protocol. Everyone is on mxit.

Yes, just as you said, more people use MSN. That's actually the only reason why I use MSN. If only more people use GTalk, then I would completely switch to it. That's really the pro/con of it, imo. Oh yeah, one more thing, GTalk doesn't support linux so lol
I use Empathy right now which enables me to connect to my MSN and GTalk account at the same time. =D

GTalk does use XMPP so they do make it easier for Linux to support them.

Many of my friends are on still on AIM, but I think I talk to more people using facebook and SMS messages these days. Heck I know nearly no one using Skype or Gtalk.

If you add your accounts under Pidgin/Empathy, there won't really be any pro's or cons, except that the MSN-protocol tends to be a bit unstable at times, swallowing messages whole. :)

typing+smilies > voice/vid chat (in most cases)
it's simple and just works
we're using the future but rarely acknowledge it.
am proud of text chat
same with forums: a voice/vid forums would be a pain/suck...
voice/vid chat is a lot more , ummm "personal"
