Maverick Meerkat?

I can just imagine the mascot for that: a meerkat with John McCain's face pasted onto it.

Sounds good, but if he want's the fastest web browser surely that'll mean ditching firefox as default?

If 10 is the traditional perfect, wouldn't 10.10 cause a buffer overflow? :P

We (Dutch people) have two names for the Suricata Suricata ¨de Meerkat¨ and ¨het Stokstaartje¨
A rough translation of stokstaartje is sticktail :P

Every release has been {adjective} {animal} now it goes Maverick, so basically Ubuntu is the Mega Man X series.

If we go with the meerkat idea, I might be able to do something with the raw video footage I have shot at the Wellington Zoo a few years ago. Sadly it's not very long but there might be possibilities.

I think the Maverick name has been a little used up, thought here are some alternatives

marauding
Mighty
Marching
...

I will update the list if I think of any more, though I would have liked to have the " Mighty Meerkat " as the 10.10 name.

Looks like the window control changes is only the beginning. :p

Mark said:

Maverick Meerkat = light, fast and social like those small animals

so good news, hope Linus push the kernel the same way.

It should be out 28th oct 2010, 10/10/10 would be better for a hat trick

Are we (minions) second-guessing our overlord (shuttleworth) ?

Because it looks like the name Maverick Meerkat has been decided upon and no further correspondence shall be entered into :lolflag: (im kubuntu user)

10.10 is going to be sweet (if not the perfect 10) i can tell right now!

I'm afraid the 2.6.36 kernel won't make it in time. 2.6.34 at the beginning of May, 2.6.35 mid/end August...

I'm surprised that Mark didn't mention GNOME Shell

a. He realized that it's crap. :P
b. That's included in those "bold moves" he mentioned.

Either way, I'm curious about what's to come.

Meerkats are, of course, light, fast and social – everything we want in a Perfect 10. We’re booting really fast these days, but the final push remains. Changes in the toolchain may make us even faster for every application. We’re Social from the Start, but we could get even more tightly connected, and we could bring social features into even more applications. Meerkats are family-oriented, and we aspire to having Ubuntu being the safe and efficient solution for all the family netbooks. They are also clever – meerkats teach one another new skills. And that’s what makes this such a great community.

I'm excited about Ubuntu getting better and more stable as time goes on (hopefully Lucid won't keep breaking my sound...) but I'm not sure how I feel about this "social desktop" thing. I guess it's an attempt for the OS to stay relevant when everything is moving to the web/browser.

The server track makes me even more excited.

Well many of the less skilled computer users (as well as others, no doubt in just about all levels of skill) are into the social stuff.

Would be funny but I don't think Caronical's business customers would be too thrilled.
"Bob: Oh yes Jim we just got Masturbating Monkey on the computer today! Jim: I know what I'm not going to be using..."
