I was reading the Town Hall Meeting logs from yesterday, and I came across this comment from mark:

(02:53:38) sabdfl: but it's worthus having the ability to do more stable AND less-stable releases
(02:54:00) sabdfl: dapper+1 will be a fun, bring-in-the-bling release, and as a result intrinsically less stable than dapper
(02:54:23) sabdfl: but having dapper lets us say to people who want super-stability "use dapper, we are laying the foundations for the next big wave here, and foundations are usually a bit dirty"
(02:54:35) Seveas: it'll be warty again ;)

So, it looks like Dapper +1 will be a 'dirty' release with loads of 'lets add this and hope it works' type of things. It'll make life fun for those of us who don't mind having to hack and fine tune the box, like me.
Yes, I'm an ex-slackware hacker, I LOVE getting my hands dirty and having to crawl into the heart of the distro to fix things.
I'm all up for this, and will probably step back in to the devel curve when I feel i'm ready for it.

fantastic. The Debianization of Ubuntu is proceeding apace. Is this going to be the beginning of the long-rumoured Grumpy Groundhog branch (our equivalent to Debian Sid)?

Now all we need are some bomb-throwing free software radicals and a cadre of users who specialise in flaming newbies ruthlessly.

Guess we will start seeing a Stable release the a Feature release. :D
Which is about the same as the SuSE released. The even releases (I.e: x.0 x.2 x.4) are always buggy were they intruduce new things and the (x.1 x.3 x.5) odd numbered release are the more stable releases.

I personaly think that they should just have 1 major release a year around June and be done with it. They can do that and just offer Security, Kernel and Gnome upgrades. Other then those 3 everything else really isnt a big upgrade that anyone will notice. This could also define the release from each other. Making each one more individual and improving stability accross the board.

IMHO,
Joey

I like the Idea. You have the stable release for those who demand stability over cutting edge and then you have the Unstable release for those who demand the latest software packages. This gives Ubuntu users a lot more choice and it offers something to please everyone.

Hm. Let's just hope the quality of the releases doesn't deteriorate. The focus should still be that the users DOESN'T have to get "their hands dirty and have to crawl into the heart of the distro to fix things" ;). Slackware and gentoo is there for those pervert.. um i mean users ;)
Businesses will probably be content with waiting a year for the next "dapper", but the average user (that doesn't want to hack the internals with cli, but still have a up to date desktop) will not be. I think the largest userbase, at least in the future, will be in this segment. (imagine allt the potential ex-windows-users out there) The opensource-world is moving so fast, it's would be a huge pain for those on "stable" to watch programs and even de's like gnome do releases and adding futures and bugfixes, and after half a year have to wait like 6 more months more before you can upgrade, becuase if you go with an "unstable" release, you would risk having to do a lot of hacking you don't have the skills for.
But it's great that there seems to be a lot of ideas and hacking-enthusiasm for dapper+1, YAY! \\:D/

Heh, it will be great for bugtesting too :D
