View Full Version : [SOLVED] HELP installing programs <<NEWB 4 Ubuntu

HEllo I just did a clean install on ubuntu the last time i messed with linux based any thing was red hat (long time ago) I am trying to get back into linux based windows due to the fact Microsoft is SPEACIAL! now i am trying to install a couple games on here but there is a problem when i get to the installation screen because this game will run in linux it tells me that " No Write permission to /USR/LOCAL/GAMES
What can i do i need help is there an emulatore for this or a patch IDK PLEASE HELP ME <<<<<<<VERY DEPRESSED GAMER not gaming lol tyvm and UBUNTU FTW! and also if i have a program that is notr linux compatiable can i make linux compatible????? thanks
I am running ubuntu 9.10
intel duo-core 1.86 ghz 4 gigs of ram 300 gig hdd and an external Creative sound card and a 8800 gts =-) thanks

Hi and welcome!

Please start over and tell me what games you are trying to install. If you are a beginner I would recommend you install only the games from the software center. Try Nexuiz if you like first person shooters.

I do not do much manual game installs on Ubuntu, but I am sure other can help you sort out your specific issues, try us! :D

allright i have unreal tournament 2004 that is the game i received an error for about write permission and then i have COD4 modern warfare, Mercenaries2 and unreal 3, and also sonar 3 by cakewalk for music recording that is the programs i use other then i hate to say it but microsoft office which i still would like to use because i paid for it a year ago before i was intruduced to open office :( thanks

Please note that Ubuntu is not Windows and is not compatible with Microsoft software. It is a completely different operating system and has it's own available tools. I advise you try native Linux software from the software center until you are more familiar with Ubuntu.

If you want your software to have a chance of working you can try the compatibility layer Wine. Search for your programs on this site and see if they are reviewed positively. Wine is quite amazing to be able to run even some very modern programs correctly however even a program working great in Wine is less reliable than native Ubuntu/Linux software. Here are some links:
