Ubuntu newbie here, switching from Windows.

I'm trying to upgrade from 6.10 to 9.10 (I used a really, really old Live CD for the installation).

The Update Manager tries to upgrade to Feisty Fawn, only to produce an Authentication Failed error.

I downloaded the 9.10 ISO and burned it, but can't seem to install from it. The disk seems to be non-bootable, as well.

Um, in that case. Try downloading the alternate install disc.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/karmic/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-i386.iso
http://releases.ubuntu.com/karmic/ubuntu-9.10-alternate-amd64.iso

and as 2hot6ft2 mentioned, burn the iso image, don't burn it as a data disc.

Could mean you burnt it as data instead of an iso image.

Did you verify the md5sum of the iso?

Did you follow the instructions for burning it?

That's what everyone will want to know first.

6.10 is no longer supported and several of the versions between that and 9.10 don't have any support so upgrading isn't likely.
