I'm looking to start my own social networking site and have been looking about but cannot seem to find anything.

I would like something like face book but without all the bell and whistles just a place where people can join groups and such.

I came acrosstuiyo but this is not released yet.

any ideas ?

Lot of discussions have happened about this on UF. I even contributed my fair share of ideas.

One idea is to support the GNU Social (http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:GNU_Social) project. They're looking at building a social network system called daisycha.in, which is currently in the planning stage. Lots of novel ideas are being tossed around (http://groups.fsf.org/wiki/Group:GNU_Social/Ideas).

I actually did a blog post (http://writerofthings.blogspot.com/) on my own thoughts on this yesterday, so good timing! :D

For reference, here's some of the old old old social networking threads I recall starting at one time or another. Might at least be some useful nuggets of truth in there somewhere.

Edit: For what it's worth, Dolphin (http://www.boonex.com/dolphin/) seems to be much nicer than Elgg.

I think what the OP is aiming for is a site based on open technologies, like identi.ca is, rather than a site that is just focused on Linux technologies.

It would be interesting to see a site that were based on FOSS code, but invited more than just tech enthusiasts. Some kind of social network that had a little bit of everything for geeks. Creative Commons stuff, tech debates, integration with identi.ca for status updates, an XMPP-based IM service...without being Facebook, of course.

Wow, thanks, man. I run a web design business and this is going to expand my client base. Very much appreciated.
