Ok its around 18 hours until April Fools in New Zealand! Ok here goes the usual drill:

Rules:

1. Stay within the board rules, no matter how hot you may believe the wallpaper/screen shot to be.
2. If you are going to quote, there isn't a need to quote an img-embeded picture - Just don't do it. Please just reference the post by page number/page link/etc.
3. Off Topic Posts will be edited or removed.
4. The desktops thread is not to be used as a means to post explicit or suggestive, and provocative images (they must be safe for your kids and/or boss to see). Please help to keep the thread relevant and safe to browse for everyone.
5. The moderators of this forum reserve the right to edit or remove your posts as necessary so they may comply with our Community Rule set.
6. Please use reduced-size thumbnails, out of respect for people running on lower bandwidth or screen resolutions.
7. To avoid having users having to ask you for them. when possible we request that you format your posts in the following order: NOTE this is optional

Themes: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Wallpaper: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Icons: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).
Programs: Name/where you got it (with link would be nice).

Important Note: Any image posted that is over 800 x 600 will be removed! Use a thumbnail or use a text link to your image. If your image is removed, this is why.

My desktop (http://i.imgur.com/Ppx7n.jpg).

The theme is DarkRoom with some minor tweaks, and I found that wallpaper somewhere on the net.
Nothing spectacular as you can see, but I call it home. :)

A new month, a new install.

Crunchbang #! 10 statler on my eeepc 1005HA, fairly stock. Using the Any Colour You Like icons though they don't seem to want to take on volwheel or the Xfce power manager.

Muchos tweaking to be done to get it right for me, but hopefully I'll get there...

Please note that I just made it today, so there are probably some kinks.
Also, I've only used it in OpenBox with lighter, netbook-friendly apps, so I have no idea how it'll work with Gnome/Xfce/etc with apps like Gimp/O.Off/etc.

I've had trouble finding a better font to use, this is one of my best choices (its completely readable at that size) and using fonts bigger seems weird. Any suggestions? Fonts are GE Inspira and Lucida Sans.

Although it's kind of limiting, in that it's a boldface-only font, LucidaMacBold looks pretty good, has pretty compact spacing and is highly legible at 7pt w/ antialiasing and no hinting. It's in my screenshot a page or two back, visible in the RSS feeds, xpad and any dialogue windows, if any were included in the shot. Segoe Semibold also handles itself pretty well. LucidaMAC looks okay until you come across an application that likes to use bold text, at which point it looks retarded. Lucida Sans Demibold looks good but again, like LucidaMacBold and Segoe Semibold, it's only a bold font.

Alternatively, you can go 8pt and check out the wide range of Futura fonts (although medium-weight is most legible). They've generally got a pretty low profile so they ought to avoid looking weird on your monitor.

If you have any trouble finding these fonts, just PM me.

Please note that I just made it today, so there are probably some kinks.
Also, I've only used it in OpenBox with lighter, netbook-friendly apps, so I have no idea how it'll work with Gnome/Xfce/etc with apps like Gimp/O.Off/etc.

Thanks! I'll work with it a little to my tastes anyway (read: I'll ruin the theme's artistic integrity). A quick glance in Abiword & Gimp seems to show there are no major issues, though. I will need more contrast so I'll set to work on the colors first.

OBT is a slightly modified Dyne, wallpaper is part of a collection from 4chan [Pokemon FTW] and no GTk or icons are shown because I hate them :) Until I find a nice white-purple GTk, and get ACYL icons to work, they're staying hidden.

I tried your suggestions, but I basically went full circle with the fonts. Lucida Sans looks just about like Lucida Mac, only it is much more compressed vertically. (Lucida Mac has retarded amounts of vertical spacing, and I like to be able to display as much as possible with my RSS feed, lyrics, etc. I tried replacing my use of GE Inspira, and futura has a lot of the same kind of characters, but doesn't really look as good in my opinion (using GE Inspira at size 8, looks great for me at any hinting other than none. LucidaMacBold suffers from the same lack of vertical conservation, but I can't say I like it at sizes 8+. I've changed my tooltips to use it though, and it looks wonderful. I've changed my small font size from 6.5 to 6.6, which has slightly better spacing.

I edited my .fonts.conf more and made Lucida MAC go to LucidaMacBold when bold.

Question for anyone who is familiar with gtk themeing. When I highlight text then it disappears because the highlight is black and the the text goes black. How do I change this in the file?Should be text[ACTIVE] and text[SELECTED] in the relevant style. For togglebuttons, you need to add a gtkbutton*gtklabel match, although this won't always work and may screw up gtkcheckbuttons.

That could be so awesome, you just need to reduce clutter and go for a [nearly] square-edged window decoration, with no [or at least a softer] inner border.

What clutter are you thinking of? I use most of the stuff in the panel and dock pretty often. I did remove dock icons for applications that aren't running, since I pretty much launch everything with gnome-do anyway.

GTK and OBT are from the Litestyle range, similar tint2 to someone else in the thread, forget their name.

Nice wallpaper (from Simple Desktops, I assume?)
Theme works well, but why don't you have Chromium use the system GTK? Is it because of the resizing problems related to xcompmgr?
...and believe the tint2 layout was originally Walkerk's.

Looking good. :)

I switched from ATI to an Nvidia graphics card to avoid headaches in Linux. WoW still runs slower than on Windows, but it runs. If only WoW under Wine would use more than two CPU cores I'd probably have no performance problems left to complain about.

On a side note, I stole my theme color from Blizzard's battle.net site :)

This setup I made fairly interesting to me. (I hope you as well, but we can settle on interesting for good or bad). I am also looking for ideas. The concept of it is no window buttons, just a menu or alt+tab to select what you want. The panel in the top right autohides and it is the only panel. What can I do to make the windows list button more easy to click? Place it somewhere else or make the panel bigger? (In case you do not see it, it is in the top far right.)

The theme is Radiance, and the wallpaper is still Kiki.

What clutter are you thinking of? I use most of the stuff in the panel and dock pretty often. I did remove dock icons for applications that aren't running, since I pretty much launch everything with gnome-do anyway. It's mostly the top panel. To a lesser degree, the fat bottom dock/panel. AWN supports gnome menu and tray plugins, IIRC so the top panel looks redundant from the get-go.

The multi-coloured CPU/MEM monitors aren't helping, either. Perhaps try giving them a more fitting colour scheme, or scrapping them and using conky instead, which is far more flexible and powerful.

Probably won't show up that well on this light forum but:

http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/8611/conky.jpg

The CPU/MEM stuff can be achieved with just a couple of lines, or one line, if you don't intend to superimpose the text over the graphs/bars. If you're unfamiliar with conky, just send me a PM.

Anyhoo, there should be some law in computing that states window management on my system only ever gets more complicated, not less.

http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/2797/complicateda.th.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/i/complicateda.jpg/)

Windows can now be 1-8/8ths or 1-2/6ths the screen width and 2-8/8ths the screen height. Had to gut parts of Transmission's info tab so the dialogues would fit the 3/8th vertical window sizes. I do not look forward to reinstalling Ubuntu at the end of April. Think I'll be sticking to LTS releases, so I don't have to bother with modding and rebuilding half the apps I use.

Opera allows you to enable/disable certain toolbars. This one is called the "statusbar", and it's the thinnest toolbar. I removed all status things from statusbar, added the usual navigation stuff to it instead and moved the statusbar to be on top.

I suppose it really a "navigation bar" now, but it's still technically the statusbar.

Running it on a 13" notebook means every pixel counts! :D

I got the best results with the addon Autohide (http://www.krickelkrackel.de/autohide/). One feature allows you to decide which toolbars are visible in fullscreen mode. I've attached a screenshot to show how it can look like (seems like it gets automatically resized, it's 1280x800 original).

I don't use Ubuntu anymore, but I really liked that screenshot and never submitted it before.

I uploaded a screenshot of my Kubuntu 10.04 screen earlier in this thread that is actually from April, if that makes you happy :)

I really like how your media player info is on the window. It looks like it is displayed on the window, and doesn't interrupt the wallpaper. The Emerald theme is much too thick for me, but it compliments the colors well. Nice job.

Not much new.
Sorting out some GTK related kinks, slightly altered contrast levels, and new wallpaper.

To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. detailed results (link) (http://techlogg.com/content/view/360/31/) from a new study confirm this.

Not trying to be overcritical; just found it interesting.

I'm not sure what's more depressing: that Rose still associates himself with Digg, or that someone reads it. http://uyac.com.au/forum/images/smilies/psyduck.gif

Almost posted in the March thread.

Not much different from my last screenshot.
Just sorted out the kinks in my GTK and gave the theme a flatter look.

Sidux + Openbox, like usual. Compositing disabled.
