I just upgraded my Mom's HP laptop from 9.04 to 9.10. When I restart her PC, it boots up to a command line prompting for user name and password instead of the GUI environment she had with 9.04. What should I do? I am stumped and not very comfortable as how to proceed from here.

How can I get back to her regular environment with a desktop etc....

sounds like you did a safe install instead of a full install

enter sudo gdm and that should give you a desktop

I just tried what you suggested jerrys and I received the following:

failed to acquire org.gnome.displaymanager
connection ":1.20" is not allowed to own the service org.gnome.displaymanager due to security policies in the configuration file

What should I do now?

Thanks JerryS.

I hope someone else has an answer. I checked the links you provided above but can't seem to find a quick answer. This is my Mom's PC. I really need to get it back up and running by the time she comes home (in about 6 hours!!!
