Just a general question. I would like to give a go at KDE, but I would like to install it on top of ubuntu... I desire to have gnome and kde working together so I just have to logoff and loggin again.

A knowledgeable friend told me to use KDE as a different user, is it a good advice? If so why is it a good advice?

Why can't I have KDE running with the same main user?

General insight in the installation would be welcome! Cheers for your comments.

If you use both as the same user, your menus and options can get a bit overwhelming and confusing, so I can see what your friend means. However, I have in the past had both ubuntu-desktop and kubuntu-desktop on the same OS with just one user, and it is still very usable.

Try both if you want; once it's installed, you can't actually hide one desktop environment from a user and stop them using it, so it will still be available to your gnome user if you want it; it will simply never produce any of the hidden configuration files and folders that will appear once you use kde and its applications.

You can easily install the KDE desktop on top of the Ubuntu (Gnome) desktop. If you don't mind the added bloat, then just follow this tutorial to add Kubuntu to your Ubuntu:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/kde
And if you really like KDE, then you can remove all the Gnome stuff and run with a pure KDE Kubuntu like this:
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purekde

I know I do often complain that I wish things would be slightly easier for some things on linux/ubuntu, but then again, with some patience, we can learn much more and the community is great as proven in the above! Thank you VERY much, will keep you posted!

I will install KDE, with only KDE-core as described in the link above. As soon as I have a few minutes!

Thank you for answering my question.
