I recently got a smartphone loaded with (yuck) windows mobile. I was wondering if it would be possible to install Damn Small Linux on the phone and still use it as... a phone. Has anyone done this, and is there any documentation?

Android (http://www.android.com/) or Moblin (http://moblin.org/) may be a better choice than DSL as thay are made for use on a mobile device.

DSL is only available for x86 processors. No smartphones use x86 processors.

It may be possible to use Ubuntu MID, but I don't think it has phone-call functionality. Or you could look at Android.

Generally it's not easily possible to change the phone's operating system, so if you don't like your phone's operating system you'll probably have to live with it or buy a new phone.

You might also consider Mer (http://wiki.maemo.org/Mer) as an alternative. It's based on Maemo, the same OS Nokia uses on some of their internet tablets and smart phones (notably the N-Series, including the N900).

Angstrom (http://www.angstrom-distribution.org/) might also work, but I've never played around with it much. I know the Touchbook uses an Angstrom-based distro for their default OS, so it should work on a smart phone (though the telephony and SMS portions you'd expect from a smart phone may be missing).
