The fact that MS advertises kind of amazes me. Is there an Earthling that does not know who they are, what they do, and what products they have?

If you find one then rest assured that person couldn't care thing one about computers anyway so that's not business that advertising will save.

Maybe they are trying to win some folks back from the Mac market. Which makes sense. If they won even 10% of the people they lost to Apple back you are still talking about hundreds of thousands of people.

One of my dad clients calls his computer a commadore still. Even though we have him running XP/98. Never calls it windows or microsoft. Old average people don't know or care.

I think you totally missed the point of those commercials. The commercials are about people taking credit for windows 7, which is obviously a joke. The part where the person looks better while they are telling THEIR story about how they came up with an idea for windows 7 is supposed to imply that they think they are better looking (or just better/smarter in general) than they really are.

It's called marketing. You don't see advertisements with ugly people on them.

The only way they make money is if people buy Windows.
The reason people buy Windows7 is if they think it is better than Vista or Mac.(If they had Linux, They know that Linux is the best, and will always stay that way.)
If Windows was perfect, they couldn't make an upgrade, then they wouldn't make money.
People would migrate from Vista to 7 if they think it has solved their problems.
Thus the ads.

I take the opposite approach... advertisement is less pathetic when you think about it. Its merely informing consumers of a product that they might want. There is some social value there. With the advent of the internet however, I sometimes wonder if TV ads are going obsolete as a source of information for consumers.

And Microsoft fails at marketing quite badly.

Has anyone other than the UK seen the Ads for IE8 LOL 30 secs very rushed and all because W7 in Euro land had to make other internet search engines available in one of their updates so we swapped all our windows PCs to Firefox or Google Chrome :P

I think the W7 commercials are great. In the first one, the good looking guy actually looked like a buff version of the first guy. You've got to admit that these commercials are better than the Jerry Seinfeld/Bill Gates commercials.

And they're definitely better than the extremely hackneyed Mac/PC commercials. For a company who claims to be so innovative, Apple sure isn't showing it in their same old idea commercials. They need to just show their old 80's futuristic commercial of the guy breaking the giant screen.
