I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 (using 9.04 CD ISO then Update Manager for 9.10) and it freezes when I click the System menu, or start Firefox, or any above menu.

I had to dual install 9.04 (which I am using now) and 9.10 just so I could solve the problem. I tried reinstalling 9.10, but it still freezes. The System menu has no icons at all, except the child menus.

I have an Elitegroup ECS 945GCT-M version 3.0 board with Intel P4 dual core 2.2GHz, and Kingston 2GB ram. Ubuntu is on a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8 ATA-133 (IDE). The HDD only has the two Ubuntu installations on it. Only version 9.10 freezes (I had Xubuntu 7.10 when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04, then to 9.10).

What could it be? A bug?

it might be compiz,
try turning it off in system>preferences>appearance>visual effects>none.
( if you can get that far w/out freezing)
if not, we will have to wait for the pros.

So far, that appears to have worked. Now, how do I find a fix for it? The special effects work just fine with 9.04.

An update, instead of opening a new thread. I added a user and cannot get to the Visual Effects to turn them off before the system freezes. Any ideas?
