I am looking at getting a netbook, but as a current mac user I don't want windows. Ubuntu seemed like an easy choice, but I have heard about some installation issues and some things not working. I know nothing about the linux command line and just want it to install.

What netbooks work 100% out of the box with ubuntu?

Also if I do a dual boot and something goes wrong durring the install, will I be able still use the windows partition?

Well, one thing you should always do is boot into a live cd. (Or live usb in your case)

Select try ubuntu without changing your computer. And see if all your hardware works.

If it does, you know that ubuntu will when you install. Simply restart the computer and then choose instal.

Hi Gdog, you may find this list helpful: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks

Also keep in mind there will be a new Ubuntu release, 10.04 Lucid Lynx, in April. It will no doubt have better hardware support for the latest hardware.

The easiest option would be to buy a netbook with Ubuntu pre-installed, for example: http://www.system76.com/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=92

the ASUS Eeepc 1000he should work 100% out of the box. dont bother with a dualboot, windows XP sucks.

If you wait a month or so, lucid lynx should be out and you will have iphone support and an "app store" like interface for installing stuff.

How about this? Would ubuntu work with the multitouch?

The multi touch does not yet work for ubuntu. I have Lucid on mine and everything works great, but I am not able to work the touchpad to its highest abilities. Using two fingers I can zoom in and out with XP, but not ubuntu.

Too bad, but Its not worth using a bloated OS for.

I dual boot it, but I haven't booted XP in a few weeks. I only use Windows for Netflix and I prefer to use one of my larger screened systems for that.

I would suggest a gateway LT series, since they have a bigger hard drive, better graphics, and are the size of the larger netbook. I have one and use Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 with the only issue being hibernate. It will sleep and hibernate in 10.04 but not in 9.10. However, 10.04 is still beta, so there are various issues that I have come across.

Which netbook are you using?
