I have 2 different flash drives with live copies of Ubuntu on them. One was made by using UNbootin. That copy uses only 1 GB of space, but is not persistent. I made a second flash drive by using the first flash drive, clicking the install and installing to the flash drive. Now it takes up 3 GB of space! What's the deal?! The only added features that I can tell is a login screen. Is there any way I can slender this down?

You installed it.
If you had used Unetbootin, it would be the same size. :)
Maybe check out System->Administration->Live USB Creator?

Did it pull data from the internet? or decompressed some of the files? There was a fully functional OS using unetbootin, but it wasn't persistent. Surely simply adding persistence didn't add 2 GB...
Live USB Creator would create a persistent copy?

It would be just like a HDD install. Just as a side note when I tried a USB Install I wasn't able to run it on any computer other then the one I made it on.
