Cant go back to extra visual effects

k so i had the advanced visual effects working then for some reason (dont ask me why) i turn them off for like 2 seconds and now i cant turn it back on

any help??

What happens is:
click "extra" it searches for drivers, then all of a sudden all you see if my wallpaper, then it goes back and the appearence settings is a little bit greyd out for abit, then it goes back to "none" setting
