I have a 200GB hard drive partioned with a c and d d: is the recovery disk for windows. C: had 32 GB free. Is that 32GB enough to make a partion for Unbunto 9.10? I am running windows xp media edition and have unloaded as many programs as possible until I know this will work and defragged.

Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC and Intel-based Mac architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the alternate install CD (384MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer). Install requires at least 4 GB of disk space.

To answer more direct: 32GB should be enough to run Ubuntu without any problems.

10GB is already very comfortable for Ubu.
