Ok I just got a temporary replacement lappy yesterday I ended up due to financial reasons having to sell 4 good lappys :( anyways I know your going to say install xubuntu but to tell the truth i dont like it!

So heres my specs:
PIII 750
256Mb RAM will try to upgrade to 512Mb
4Mb video memory
512Mb swap partition
EXT4 main partition

I have stopped several startup services but my question is what else can I do in ubuntu to speed it up?

It's a little underpowered for 9.10.

Just used to having a slower machine. The main issue is going to be with gnome, and think that it is the one thing that you would want to keep.. Putting a new faster PATA drive in it probably will help and you definitely need to get it up to at 512..

Hiyas,

Put lubuntu onto it. It's still in beta, but the 10.04 series have all been pretty good. You can try it as LiveCD first, and wait until the end of April but it's running sweet on my system :-)

There's a brief introduction and links over at http://forum.phillw.net/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=54

Seems to be meeting with approval :D

Phill.
