would it be because i use a CD ROM instead of a DVD? i used IMG Burn to burn the ISO

I don't know specific about Kubuntu, but I burned Ubuntu images on CD with IMGburn without any problems.

Boot the CD and choose the check-media-option (don't know for sure what it's called).
If that fails, you may want to check the MD5-sum of the ISO you downloaded.

I'd say that you *always* should check the md5sum before burning an iso to a cd.

I'd say you're abolutely right, whenever there are sums availiable (which in the case of *ubuntu is almost always, except the first few days/hours after a new release has seen public daylight)

i just tried to get mandriva also and it would just stay on the boot screen, i stayed there for about 20-30min and just gave up, should i stay there longer?

Ubuntu-tutorial: how to MD5-sum (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM)
Wikipedia: What is MD5 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5)
Ubuntu: hashes of the current distributions (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuHashes)

No, it should never take that long before producing "anything", like a progress-bar (which actually has to produce some progress during that time).

Actually checking the MD5 first is better. Wasting time is bad.
