Hi every1, didnt know were to post this... apologies to the admins if its on the wrong place

I'm hoping this post allow us to share thoughts, ideas...links and more. This is what I have in mind, I've got 4 old Hp Laptops, 1.6Ghz CPU, 512 Ram to name a few... now I wanna set up a Terminal Server using Ubuntu 9.10 and FreeNX (this is the how-to http://is.gd/aZP6R) and run those laptops as thin clients. 1st question is how powerfull should my server be? These clients will only be used for browsing the net, accessing some samba shares and probably word and excel as they will probably run MS (not every1 favours *nix) but they have to be able to do this simultaneously. What other hardware will I need either than the laptops, server and switch perhaps? I also wanna be able to connect to the network (server to be more specific) remotely (as the network will be running from home) while at work during the day. Am I day dreaming here or is all of this possible?

Try starting here, LTSP (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP).

I wanted something similar when I first started in *nix. I wanted to be able to access stuff at home, and I was used to the Windows methodology of sharing my screen.

The trouble is, that took up a fair bit of bandwidth to achieve. I had better results with using an encrypted ssh tunnel as a proxy, and hitting all of my stuff at home that way.

It may solve your problem, it may not-- I can't speak to that without having a better idea of your reasoning behind your question. I just figured I'd mention my experience-- if you want help going in that direction, speak up! :-)
