Can you burn another CD? I ask because using the alternate install CD may work for you in this case.

Yeah thats the one. It requires a lot less RAM than the graphical installation disk.

Ok First you need to burn the Alternate install ISO to a CD. Do you know where to get that ISO image?

Here (http://releases.ubuntu.com/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso)

Burn that to a CD and boot from it. It is an easy install.

Ok, sounds to me like a HDD or Optical Drive problem then. Do you have any other optical drives installed or laying around?

If you want to reformat your hard-drive, I recommend Gparted. It's a bootable tool that allows you to shuffle around, add delete and reformat your partitions. It's available on the Ultimate Boot CD (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) or on it's own (http://www.icewalkers.com/Linux/Software/526550/GParted-livecd.html).

I had trouble installing Ubuntu from it's graphical install and found the text-only install to be much more simple and just as user friendly.

In regards to reformatting the HDD, as said above just boot a live CD and use gparted. Type gparted in a terminal to get it running. But i have never seen a windows install block a linux one which again leads me to believe either your HDD is going bad or your Optical Drive is going bad.
