I have a pc with a dual-boot, with Windows XP (which I want to keep), and an old version 8 Ubuntu installation, which I want to delete. (I want to put a clean installation of a newer version on.) Can someone give me detailed step-by-step directions on how to do this without destroying the MBR? It's been so long since I did this, I don't remember how. I'd appreciate your help!

You do not need to uninstall it. Just do a clean install using the partition or partitions that Ubuntu is now using. Use the manual option during the install. How is it now set up? Do have a separate parttion for /home and one for /? If so just install the new version to your / partition and and leave the /home alone (do not format it).
