The device you are looking for is called a code scanner, they are available at most well stocked auto parts stores. Have a look here (http:///www.thinkythings.org/obdii/) for more info.

The device you are looking for is called an "OBD-II Scanner"

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics verson II) is a standard protocol that automotive systems use for basic diagnostics and emissions troubleshooting. Basic scanners will show the standard dataset. Since OBD-II is a separate protocol that "piggybacks" ontop of your cars ECU programming, if you spend the money and get a scanner/programmer that is fully compatible with your ECU, you can do lots more tricky stuff like datalogging, sensor recalibration, and engine re-mapping.

If you just want to read error and trouble codes - any standard OBD-II scanner will get the job done.

Hope that helps,

-Jason

The socket is the ODB socket, most recent cars use ODBII. You can get a lot of code readers that will just check the engine but not the manufacturer specific extras.

There is also software available (mainly for windows unfortunately) that you can use together with a cable to scan for faults, change settings and do all sorts of things.

A company called Rosstech do some software (VCDS) for VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda that is as good as the equipment the official dealers have.
