Canonical does alot for open source, despite what many people would have you believe.

How are they going to pay that sys admin next year?
GNOME-Guy:"Yeah we can only pay you half of what we said we would.."
Sys-Admin: "What... Why?"
GNOME-Guy: "Donations didn't meet our expectations.."
You can probably figure out the rest for yourself. :D

On the Gnome donation banner it says:
The GNOME Project needs your help!
GNOME Foundation wants to hire a sysadmin so that GNOME developers can focus on GNOME
I just presumed that's where the donated money is going to go.

Mark Shuttleworth is also personally a major sponsor of KDE, IIRC.

Just imagine what the free software world could have done with the kind of money those "big" bankers got by whining... *grml*
I am happy to donate my 10€ a month. (not even two packs of cigarettes!)
"No single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood." (read it on a demotivational at despair inc I think).
One of the beauties of FOSS is, that it's the 'everyone can have a part' thing in the modern world. And unlike many democracies, this still works on a highly efficient and productive level. :D

Thanks for the link. I also made a donation. I can't afford a monthly subscription right now, but maybe in future...

Every year I evaluate who to donate to, This year I an renewing my EFF membership and I am adding a monthly donating to GNOME which I have been meaning to do for a while. Thank you for the reminder.
Aside that there are many fine one time requests from certain developers, Richad Hughes e.g. recently requested help to buy equipment to improve gnome-color-manager which many willing donations (mine included) helped happen.
