I am curious if anyone has played around with this desktop environment? I would love to see a Linux distro use this as default. I think one thing Mac does well is self contained apps. Has anyone been able to get ROX to work on Ubuntu? Does anyone know of a distro that uses ROX as the default environment?

Thanks!

I found this with a Google search. I hope it is what you are looking for, or at least leads you in the right direction.

I use ROX as my default desktop environment in Ubuntu, so I've definitely managed to get it working :)

Could you perhaps expand upon its merits? I would be interested in learning a bit more about your experience using it with Ubuntu. Thanks.

The self contained apps (AppDirs as they're known) are a definite bonus. Being able to remove an application just by deleting its folder beats having to open up Synaptic in sudo mode and then searching for it.

As for its merits. Well, it's horses for courses really. I like it because it's more full featured than most window managers (though icewm comes close) but lighter than any of the big DEs.

but they combine it with jwm window manager that has its own panel.

After some struggle, I now got my Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) to run gnome combined with rox file manager.
IMHO Rox really rox, but one thing that's really annoying:
When I right-click a file in a rox filer window and choose something from the context menu, this file remains selected after the operation (unless, of course, I removed it from its place). For example, In a filer window (screenshot 1),http://ubuntuforums.org/1.png I see in the properties of an entry, here "downloads" (2), and then this file remains selected (3), and when I right click another entry, e.g. "Unknown Artist - Unknown Album" at the right side, I choose to delete it, but rox still thinks I mean the "downloads" directory (4). And Rox has no Trash recovery. **** happens.
How can this be fixed? I don't want files to remain selected after a context menu operation.

Thank You

You need to get the latest developer version of ROX Filer. It's been fixed in that.

Go to www.roscidus.com and look in software

Thank you, but I didn't find anything beyond 2.10, which is the one I have. I also know ROX from Puppy linux and I never noticed this bug, but I'll have a look at that again. Maybe it's a window manager issue?

I think the developer version is only available through git. I'll see if I can get a link through the news group.
