Hey all, I would like to create a custom DE for myself and maybe others if its anywhere near good enough. So I was just wondering if there was anything out there that can be stripped down and doesn't have many completely necessary applications tagged onto it a la nautilus for gnome....?

I believe XFCE prides itself on modularity and small code base. It may be worth looking at for you. A custom desktop environment will be a hard thing to make and I wish you the best of luck in doing it.

Start with the minimal install CD and then add whatever you want.
