3g watchdog (monitors your 3g data transfers)
Wifi Analyzer
Cribbage pro beta
pdf viewer
photoshop mobile
star wars light saber
carrr matey
Wifi Static (allows me to configure my wifi manually, let me hook up to my schools wifi by specifying DNS and Gateways)
CadreBibley
Astro file manager (gives you some control over the files on your android)
Weather
Live Scores
Advanced Task Killer (totally a must have)
I have other games also but really no big deal.

I really like android even though I have 1.5 on the phone. I'll be looking for a safe way to upgrade as soon as possible. I have the samsung galaxy i7500.
The only thing I don't like is the codec support. Encoding videos in 3GP and not supporting AVI or Mpeg is archaic.

You actually don't need a task killer. I had it when I was new but realized killing tasks manually actually screw$ the Android experience. Don't believe me read this... (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html)

By default, every application runs in its own Linux process. Android starts the process when any of the application's code needs to be executed, and shuts down the process when it's no longer needed and system resources are required by other applications.

Having multiple processes running in background doesn't drain the battery; its active data connections and probably steaming widgets!

Thanks for your link: http://bit.ly/doICOA

I installed Swype on my N1 but unfortunately it doesn't work on my display size 800 x 400 or 400 x 800.

I found a Android application that essentially does the same thing as Swype but appears to be more stable:

ShapeWriter keyboard - 5.61mb
http://www.shapewriter.com/android.html

- Touiteur (Twitter client)
I absolutely love Touiteur twitter client and find it the best yet on Android; for identi.ca fans try mustard.

i use the camera all the time and pic say and just got fxcamera, too. i use opera mini as a browser and gmail for mail. smart tac toe and schottgun are good for wasting time.

edit: you guys have to get schottgun. While not a fan of Opera mini I do love FxCamera...I love having a 5 mega-pixel camera on the Nexus One the picture quality is comparable to professional photography I take. I also enjoy the painless uploads to Facebook. I also have Photoshop.com Mobile installed, not as crazy about it but it automatically loads all my photos. I have to try out the Picasa App.

I haven't tried out schottgun yet but will give it a try. ;)

Have you tried Vignette (demo version)?

You actually don't need a task killer. I had this app. when I was new on this platform but I realized when I stopped killing tasks manually my phone starts performing better. Don't believe me read this... (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/fundamentals.html)

Some details of the apps would be nice...

A couple more new installs which I found necessary:

WaveSecure - Lets me remotely lock and track my phone via GPS if it is lost or stolen. It is currently free and good for a free lifetime subscription until the end of this month.

Knocking Live - Stream live video to other Android phones and Iphones. VERY useful. Currently in beta which means no sound but that should be rectified with next release.

ooh! i love gesture search. for a chronic openbox user who often has nothing but the time on the desktop, this app is great.

it allows me to go from this...

to this...

http://omploader.org/tM3lheg (http://omploader.org/vM3lheg)

that wallpaper was taken with the solarize filter on the camera that came with my droid. at 5 megapixels, it's nearly the match of my 5.2 meg nikon (though i doubt the lens is as good). i've even used the video setting to film my students singing (i'm a voice teacher). (i think some of them are horrified by my 'new box of shattered dreams'). (i'm starting to sound like 'android youth'.)

I agree, this should be something that should not require root. Until that happens, you can use the Android SDK to grab screens. Its the 'ddms' application that comes with the SDK, pretty easy to use too.

You just start swiping a letter stroke, and it searches everything for that letter. It's a great quick way to search, especially for contacts.

Aldiko (e-book reader)
aNetShare (wifi tethering)
Animal Translator (Google's April fool's joke, I just had to try it since they went through all the trouble of actually creating the app..)
Astro (file/application/process manager)
Barcode Scanner
Engadget
Facebook
Jevels (best free bejeweled clone for android, and one of my all-time favourite minigames)
Notes (just a simple, basic app for notes)
SNesoid Lite (what could possibly fit mobile devices better than all the great SNES RPG games?)
ScummWM (..well, perhaps all the great old-school adventure games. :D)
Spare Parts (just some settings missing from Android's settings menu)
TaskPanel (in case I need to kill some process)
Wallpaper Set&Save (the default gallery app seems to reduce the quality of images way too much when you set them as walpaper)
Wifi Analyzer (a great tool for figuring best WiFi channels and checking the signal levels etc)
bunch of other apps that came with Sense and the ROM I'm using

A couple of tips for you, since you mentioned these two: Astro actually allows you to kill processes, too. You don't really need to kill tasks. A good practice if you want to not have lingering apps in RAM is to exit the apps via the Back button instead of the Home button.

Yep, I know both things, but as I have the bad habit of playing around with things outside of the Market I sometimes end with a frozen app that I really need to kill manually. And while Astro could be used to kill it (that's why I listed it as process manager), I simply like the interface in TaskPanel more. To be honest I haven't really needed it in a while..

But I do agree that killing tasks isn't necessary, and shouldn't even be done in normal situations. I really don't worry about the RAM usage, Android seems to manage that just fine even if you don't use the Back button to exit from programs. Using any automatic task killers of course is a very bad idea, and generally just causes problems instead of doing anything good.

But thanks for the tip anyway, based on how many people seem to run some automatic task killer I bet that at least somebody else learned something useful about Android.. :)

Doh! I just re-read your post, and you did list it as a process manager.

I guess I just got excited, because I didn't know those things for the longest time. As I have only 192 MB of RAM, I actually did notice if apps hadn't been killed (even on my rooted roms). Hitting Back instead of Home made a huge different performance-wise.

mcduck
April 9th, 2010, 06:29 PM
Sound like I should actually start killing the extra apps every now and then, at least to see if it makes any difference. But I usually use the Back button, and the ROM I'm currently running is a bit slow anyway so I'm not sure if I'll get any noticeable results.. :)

For all you musicians out there gStrings is a really outstanding tuner, easily as accurate and functional as most purpose built chromatic tuners. And it's free!

SwiFTP is really nice for transferring files to and from your phone and computer via the wifi network. It's free as well.

Also, if you're in need of a Chinese-English dictionary I highly recommend Hanping.

Thanks for the tip on using the back button to exit apps. I'll give that a try.

Screenshots are available when connected to your computer.

Some that I don't think are in the thread yet(?):
I couldn't live without Fring or Nimbuzz for real Skype anywhere.
Wardrive is handy for anyone without a 3G plan.
ProxySettings lets you get http traffic through a proxy
ToggleSettings gives fast access to settings.
TasKiller has one touch task killing (don't know why people here don't like task killers?)
Alarmania is the perfect alarm clock for me.
AndWeather gives me weather without displaying it on my home screen!
Dolphin is a better browser.
LindaManager (I used to use Astro, but got tired of it nagging me to update)
Layar is very cool.
So is Quake2 on my phone!
After Nimbuzz, Google Maps and Google Earth, my favourite app is GameBoid, to turn my phone into a GBA whenever I want, and have access to a massive range of great games.

Home++ - A homescreen replacement that is faster and much smoother than the default(Nexus One). It also has scroll wrapping for the home screens. There are a few settings that can make it even faster.
RadioTime - 10,000+ fm radio stations in one app. It shows current artist/host info as well.
Subsonic - Client that has a free java based server to stream your music collection on your home computer. I really recommend this one even beyond Android. It has a great web interface as well. You can make separate logins that will transcode to different bit rates or formats depending on the bandwidth available. Great for streaming my large 50+ GB music collection to my car even on Edge.
Zenonia - Good rpg for Android and iPhone
MortPlayer - Music player that uses directory structure rather than ID3 tags. Many other features such as, swipe gestures, large buttons for in car use, etc.

Somebody mentioned something about screen captures and root. If you use the Android SDK it comes with a Davlik Debug Monitor Utility (within the tools directory), that is capable of screen caputures. The phone needs to be plugged into the computer however. This method doesn't require root!!!

Side comment however, why wouldn't you root? I'm aware some of the newer phones can't be rooted (yet), however most of the older phone models can be rooted.

Google Skymap is awesome for an amateur astronomer or even the casual sky observer.

I've installed PDAnet to try to tether my HTC Droid via bluetooth, but no success so far. They don't have USB tethering for linux yet.

Only had the Droid for 2 weeks. The maps and navigator are the most useful apps so far, on a rather long working vacation I'm taking.

Everything works & I mean EVERYTHING. I haven't booted into WinMo for a week. VOice calls, SMS, MMS, email, Android market, Google Navigation, 5MP camera and video, flashlight, FaceBook, if you like that kind of thing, all the widgets. You name it, it works!!!!

If you are interested, I am using the Desire build with some tweaks.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=736545. Because it's on as SD card, if it does go wrong, you can reset the phone and boot back into WinMo with no real consequences. Obviously, it can go wrong but I have had zero issues.

I am on a Motorola Droid 1 running the Simply Stunning 4.7 rom with a 1.2ghz kernel. Being my personal phone but used for work I have a nice mix of apps. The list is a bit light right now as I did a cleanup a couple of days ago.
