View Full Version : [ubuntu] 8.10 added as dual/boot to 9.10 - killed 9.10

Have amd64 with 8.10 upgraded twice to 9.10 that hangs at "mountall:job failed to start, could not access PID files---ect,ect,starting timidity--alsa midi emulation" after installing ultimate 2.0 (8.10) as the secound OS. still will boot to ultimate 2.0, but booting to any version of original install results in above crash.
Anyone know what is broken? Boot seems to start but then crashes at the above mentioned line.

THANKS, BT

don't think it's a boot problem, have made it to safe mode and startx got my desktop up with no eth0, and no ability to shut down.
Was able to run recovery mode - fix broken packages.fsck happened to run on its own (21boots), and now it's worse. when recovery mode starts it is instantly overwritten with other loading text and becomes unusable.

Hi,

when you put 8.10 on, you down-graded to grub legacy (menu.lst)
=> Grub 0.97 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive

Grub legacy and ext4 file systems (the default for 9.10) don't 'play' well together.

Upgrade back to grub2 --> https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2#Upgrading to GRUB 2

Regards,

Phill.

The 9.10 is an upgrade from 8.10 and therefore still retained the .97 grub. Think I have hard drive problems surfacing again. Happened before and fsck fixed it, but now I have 120 bad blocks. Think I'll buy a new hard drive and retire this to tempory storage use.

After dinking with it over and over with e2fsck,badblocks, and some other stuff, I finally tried a SuSe 11.1 X86 /64 disk and the repair installed system worked. for now'''''
